to play a game of catch

Few desserts capture the essence of fall better than a warm, well-spiced, buttery apple crisp (preferably a la mode!). Crisps usually cook in well over 30 minutes, but this one's ready in half the time — no oven preheating required. For a crispy browned top, finish cooking in a 450°F oven for a few minutes.

All of Anyday’s recipes are tested (and retested!) in many different microwaves and home kitchens to make sure they work — and work well.

To find your microwave’s wattage, look at the front panel, the side of the door, in the back, in the user manual, or Google the model number. If both an input and output wattage are listed, use the output.

Wattage translates to how powerful the microwave is. The higher the wattage, the faster your food will cook. The lower the wattage, the longer the cook time.

When in doubt, start with less time — you can always add more.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 3 apples, peeled, seeded and diced (3 cups, 350g)
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup (115g) apple sauce
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch

For the Crisp Topping

  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ cup (50g) old-fashioned whole rolled oats
  • ¼ cup (55g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼  teaspoon salt

Preparation

  1. Mix all the ingredients for the filling in the Anyday dish and set aside. (NOTE: The smaller you cut the apples, the softer they will be. Cut to the texture of your liking.)
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the crisp topping ingredients until well incorporated. Sprinkle the topping mixture over the apple mixture, making sure the apples are evenly covered.
  3. Cook uncovered for 6-7 minutes, or until the edges bubble up and the topping feels firm.
  4. Allow the crisp to cool slightly. Serve warm or cold.

Serving suggestions & tips

  • For an even easier crisp, top the apple mixture with pre-made granola before cooking.
  • Add chopped almonds to the topping for a crunchier crisp.
  • Enjoy with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Substitute apples for pears, peaches, plums, or apricots.

Recipe notes

  • Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free all-purpose flour in the topping.
  • Microwave ovens vary, even with the same wattages. Adjust cooking times as needed.
