To find your microwave’s wattage, look at the front panel, the side of the door, in the back, in the user manual, or Google the model number. If both an input and output wattage are listed, use the output.

Wattage translates to how powerful the microwave is. The higher the wattage, the faster your food will cook. The lower the wattage, the longer the cook time.

When in doubt, start with less time — you can always add more.

  • ¼ cup (30g) yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped, or 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons black bean garlic sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 8 oz (225g) shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 scallions, thinly sliced

Preparation

  2. Cook in the microwave for 3-4 minutes, or until the sauce is thickened and fragrant.
  3. Stir the sauce, add the shrimp, and continue cooking for 4-5 minutes, or until the shrimp are cooked through.
  4. Top with scallions and enjoy.

Suggestions

  • Swap the veggies: Substitute bell peppers with bok choy for a simple, flavorful variation.
  • Try a different protein: Replace shrimp with chicken, tofu, or pork loin for an easy alternative that pairs well with the bold sauce.
  • Add a spicy kick: Drizzle with chili crisp or chili oil for extra heat and depth of flavor.
  • Serve over noodles: Toss the shrimp and sauce with cooked noodles for a heartier meal.
  • Pair with steamed rice: Spoon the shrimp and sauce over steamed jasmine or brown rice to soak up all the rich flavors.
  • Add mushrooms: Stir in cooked shiitake or button mushrooms for an earthy, umami boost.

Recipe Notes

  • Why use a Shallow Anyday dish? Shrimp need plenty of room to spread out to cook evenly. A Shallow Anyday dish offers more surface area on the bottom, giving the shrimp enough room to steam to perfection!
  • Microwave ovens vary, even with the same wattages. Adjust cooking times as needed.
