to go back for seconds of dessert

Livened up with orange zest, this tangy cranberry sauce is the sophisticated cousin of the jarred variety. In all honesty, it doesn't take much more work than opening a can — and doesn't require wrestling with a can opener, either.

All of Anyday’s recipes are tested (and retested!) in many different microwaves and home kitchens to make sure they work — and work well.

To find your microwave’s wattage, look at the front panel, the side of the door, in the back, in the user manual, or Google the model number. If both an input and output wattage are listed, use the output.

Wattage translates to how powerful the microwave is. The higher the wattage, the faster your food will cook. The lower the wattage, the longer the cook time.

When in doubt, start with less time — you can always add more.

Dish

The Medium Deep Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (100g) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup (50g) sugar
  • ½ teaspoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

Preparation

  1. Place all the ingredients in the Anyday dish. Cover with lid (knob lifted).
  2. Cook in the microwave for 2 minutes. Stir well and smash the berries to ensure a chunky sauce. Continue cooking for 1 minute, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  3. Allow the sauce to cool and enjoy. (NOTE: the sauce will thicken as the sauce cools.)

Serving suggestions & tips

  • Add some sage for a bit of an herbal touch.
  • Replace a quarter of the cranberries for diced, peeled apples and cook as directed for a mixed sauce.
  • Add some liquid from a can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for a smoky and spicy twist.
  • For a vegan-friendly sauce, substitute olive oil for butter and beet sugar for granulated sugar

Recipe notes

  • To reheat, stir in 1 tablespoon of water per cup (100g) of cranberries into the bowl and reheat in the microwave as needed.
  • Microwave ovens vary, even with the same wattages. Adjust cooking times as needed.
