To find your microwave’s wattage, look at the front panel, the side of the door, in the back, in the user manual, or Google the model number. If both an input and output wattage are listed, use the output.

Wattage translates to how powerful the microwave is. The higher the wattage, the faster your food will cook. The lower the wattage, the longer the cook time.

When in doubt, start with less time — you can always add more.

Different microwaves have different settings. See your microwave manual (or look it up online) to learn how to change your microwave’s power level.

For many microwaves: enter the cook time, press the “Power” (or “Power Level”) button, and select a number between 1-10. Other microwaves may require selecting the Power Level first, and then entering the cook time.

Microwaves list power levels in different ways. Here’s a guide to help you adjust:

    PL 10 = 100% = High (default)

    PL 9 = 90% = High

    PL 8 = 80% = Med-High

    PL 7 = 70% = Med-High

    PL 6 = 60% = Medium

    PL 5 = 50% = Medium

    PL 4 = 40% = Med-Low

    PL 3 = 30% = Med-Low

    PL 2 = 20% = Low

    PL 1 = 10% = Low

You will know if the power level has been successfully changed if you hear periodic changes in the microwave’s tone after it begins cooking.

for 4-5 mins until bouncy. If the bread is sticky on the sides, this is normal! The bun will dry as it cools down (it’s just steam). Repeat with the remaining dough.
  5. Serve with softened butter or preserves, or split to make a sandwich.

All You Need to Know When Making Irish Soda Bread in the Microwave

Can I cook Irish soda bread in the microwave?

Absolutely! You can cook Irish soda bread in the microwave. For a quick and easy method, portion the dough into the silicone Anytime Freezer Trays and microwave at a lower power level. This method ensures a gently steamed bun. While you won’t achieve a traditional golden brown crust, the buns will still be slightly toasted and perfectly cooked, offering a fast and easy alternative to oven-baked soda bread.

Why do I lower the power level when microwaving Irish soda bread?

Lowering the power level is crucial when microwaving Irish soda bread. It helps ensure even heating throughout the dough and prevents the buns from becoming dry or tough. By microwaving at a lower power level, you allow the dough to steam gently, preserving moisture and creating a tender, fluffy texture.

Why does this recipe use baking soda instead of baking powder?

Baking soda is the preferred raising agent in this recipe because it reacts with acidic ingredients, like buttermilk, to produce carbon dioxide. This reaction is essential for the dough to rise and achieve the light, airy texture characteristic of Irish soda bread. Baking powder, which already contains both an acid and a base, doesn’t require additional acidic ingredients to activate. Using baking soda ensures the right rise and texture for this classic bread.

How long does it take to cook Irish soda bread buns in the microwave?

Cooking times can vary based on the size of the buns and your microwave's wattage. Typically, it takes about 1-2 minutes per batch. Keep an eye on the buns and check to make sure they are firm to the touch and cooked through. Use the toothpick method to make sure these buns are cooked all the way through and adjust the time as needed for your specific microwave.

Can I prepare the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can absolutely prepare the dough in advance! Store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to cook, simply portion the dough into the Anytime Freezer Trays and microwave. This makes for a convenient option for busy days or meal prepping.

What’s the best way to store leftover Irish soda bread buns?

Store leftover buns in the Anyday dishes with the lid on to keep them fresh for up to 7 days. For a crispy texture, you can also place them in a preheated toaster oven (up to 400°F). If you need to reheat them, microwave for 10 to 30 seconds to avoid drying them out.

Can I freeze Irish soda bread buns?

Yes, you can freeze Irish soda bread buns! After cooking and cooling, return the buns to the Anytime Freezer Trays, cover with their lids, and freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat from frozen, microwave for about 30 seconds or until warmed through.

How should I reheat Irish soda bread buns?

To reheat Irish soda bread buns, place them in an Anyday dish and microwave in short, 15-second intervals until they are heated through. If reheating from frozen, it may take a bit longer.
