All you Need to Know About Making Tomato Soup in the Microwave
What is Tomato Soup?
Tomato Soup is a classic comfort food made from pureed tomatoes and seasonings. This homemade version uses canned whole peeled tomatoes and a few surprising ingredients, like white bread, to create a creamy, flavorful soup in just under 15 minutes. It's perfect paired with a grilled cheese sandwich.
Can I cook Tomato Soup in the microwave?
Absolutely! Tomato Soup can be made easily in the microwave using an Anyday dish. Just add all the ingredients to the dish, cover with the lid, and microwave until the soup is bubbling hot. Then, transfer to a blender (or use an immersion blender) and blend for a smooth, creamy texture. This microwave method avoids the need for constant stirring and messy stovetop splatters, making cleanup a breeze.
Why do you use white bread in Tomato Soup?
Torn white bread serves as a natural thickening agent, giving the soup a rich and creamy texture without the need for cream. This common Mediterranean technique of using bread to thicken soup creates a velvety consistency that makes this homemade version especially comforting and satisfying. For a gluten-free option, you can omit the bread entirely or use a gluten-free alternative.
Is the brown sugar necessary in this Tomato Soup recipe?
The brown sugar is optional but recommended if you prefer a slightly sweeter flavor. The sugar helps to balance the acidity of the tomatoes, giving the soup a more well-rounded taste. If you prefer a purely savory soup, you can omit the brown sugar without affecting the recipe's outcome.
How long does Tomato Soup last in the refrigerator?
Tomato Soup can be stored in an Anyday dish with the lid on in the fridge for up to 5 days. To reheat, microwave the soup for 1-2 minutes, stirring halfway through until it's thoroughly heated.
Can I freeze Tomato Soup?
Yes, you can freeze Tomato Soup. Use our silicone Anytime Freezer Trays to portion out ½-cup servings of the soup, and store in the freezer for up to 4 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, place a frozen portion into an Anyday dish and microwave for 2-3 minutes per portion, or until heated through.
