Select your microwave wattage in the dropdown. The cook times in this recipe will automatically change accordingly.

To find your microwave’s wattage, look at the front panel, the side of the door, in the back, in the user manual, or Google the model number. If both an input and output wattage are listed, use the output.

Wattage translates to how powerful the microwave is. The higher the wattage, the faster your food will cook. The lower the wattage, the longer the cook time.

When in doubt, start with less time — you can always add more.

Microwave oven by power - 1000w

The Medium Deep Dish

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons white onion, finely chopped
  • 8 oz (225g) lean ground beef
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup (240g) crushed tomatoes
  • 5 basil leaves, thinly sliced and optional

  1. Combine all the ingredients in an Anyday dish and stir until the sauce and meat are well incorporated. Cover with the lid (knob lifted).
  2. Cook in the microwave for 4-5 minutes until the sauce begins to bubble, the color deepens, and the meat is cooked.
  3. Add basil and adjust the seasoning to taste, if needed.

Serving suggestions & tips

  • Spicy bolognese: Add a pinch of chili flakes or chopped jalapeños for a spicy kick.
  • Light bolognese: For a leaner option, use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • Umami bolognese: Add a small amount of anchovy paste with the other ingredients for a rich, flavorful boost.
  • Creamy bolognese: Stir in 2 tablespoons of heavy cream per serving for a smooth, creamy alternative.

Recipe notes

  • Allow the sauce to cool for about 10-15 minutes. Portion the sauce evenly into the Anytime Trays, cover with the lid, and freeze.
  • Use any kind of ground meat you prefer. We recommend lean beef for a delicious, less greasy sauce.
  • Microwave ovens vary, even with the same wattages. Adjust cooking times as needed.

All You Need to Know About Making Bolognese in the Microwave

What is Bolognese?

Bolognese is a rich and hearty Italian meat sauce made with ground beef, tomatoes, onions, and other aromatics. It's traditionally served over pasta and is known for its deep, savory flavor. This classic sauce is a staple in Italian cuisine and adds a delicious touch to any pasta dish. Check out our spaghetti recipe to pair with this sauce!

Can I Make Bolognese in the Microwave?

Yes, you can make Bolognese in the microwave using an Anyday dish! This method is quick and convenient, allowing you to enjoy a delicious homemade Bolognese sauce without the long simmering times of traditional recipes. Anyday cookware ensures even cooking and results in fewer dishes and less mess.

How Do I Know Bolognese is Done Cooking?

Your Bolognese is done cooking when the meat is fully cooked, and the sauce has thickened and darkened in color. The meat should be firm and break apart easily with a spoon. If it feels mushy or looks pink, it needs more cooking time. The sauce should be rich and flavorful, with the meat and vegetables well incorporated.

How Long Can I Keep Bolognese Sauce in the Fridge?

You can keep Bolognese sauce in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. Store it in an Anyday dish with the lid on to maintain freshness and prevent spills. Make sure the sauce is completely cooled before refrigerating to preserve its quality.

Can I Freeze Bolognese?

Yes, you can freeze Bolognese sauce for up to 3 months. Allow the sauce to cool completely before transferring it to our Anytime Freezer Trays for easy portioning. Label the container with the date, and when you're ready to use it, follow the instructions in our blog for how to reheat frozen food.

How Do I Reheat Bolognese?

Reheating Bolognese is easy with an Anyday dish. Simply transfer the sauce to your Anyday dish, cover, and microwave on medium power for 2-3 minutes, stirring halfway through. Continue to heat until the sauce is warmed through. If reheating from frozen, cook 1-2 minutes per portion and stir occasionally to ensure even heating. Check out more reheating times in our blog.
