To find your microwave’s wattage, look at the front panel, the side of the door, in the back, in the user manual, or Google the model number. If both an input and output wattage are listed, use the output.

Wattage translates to how powerful the microwave is. The higher the wattage, the faster your food will cook. The lower the wattage, the longer the cook time.

When in doubt, start with less time — you can always add more.

  3. Add the green beans, salt, pecans, cherries, water and lemon zest. Stir well to combine and cover with lid again.

  5. Add the chives and mix well.

Serving suggestions & tips

  • Vegan twist: For a vegan approach, swap the butter for olive oil to keep the dish plant-based.
  • Scallions and cranberries: Substitute leeks with scallions, dried cherries with dried cranberries, and pecans with pumpkin seeds or your favorite nuts.
  • Savory boost: For an extra savory kick, render some bacon or pancetta with the butter and leeks before adding the rest of the ingredients.
  • Spicy kick: For a bit of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce while cooking.
