This recipe is destined to become your new favorite, and we wholeheartedly guarantee it. While the preparation steps may differ slightly from traditional stovetop methods, that's precisely where the Anyday magic comes into play. By initially combining the sausage with the flour, we effectively minimize the frustrating issue of lumps that can arise during gravy-making. The outcome is a sumptuously smooth gravy with the perfect balance of sausage and sauce in every delectable bite.

Remember to give it a good stir halfway through the cooking process; this simple step prevents the flour from settling at the bottom, ensuring even cooking and impeccable results. Elevate your gravy game with this foolproof recipe!

All of Anyday’s recipes are tested (and retested!) in many different microwave and home kitchens to make sure they work— and work well. Unless specified otherwise, all recipes should be cooked at full power.

To find your microwave’s wattage, look at the front panel, the side of the door, in the back, in the user manual, or Google the model number. If both an input and output wattage are listed, use the output.

Wattage translates to how powerful the microwave is. The higher the wattage, the faster your food will cook. The lower the wattage, the longer the cook time.

When in doubt, start with less time — you can always add more.

Dish

The Medium Deep Dish

Ingredients

  • 4 oz (115g) bulk pork breakfast sausage, or plant-based alternative
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup (120 ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream

Preparation

  1. Add sausage, flour, and seasoning into the Anyday dish and combine with a fork. This step will help the flour dissolve correctly when you add the liquids.
  2. Slowly mix in the milk and cream until fully incorporated into the sausage mixture, making sure the sausage breaks down into small, coarse pieces. This will help prevent big clumps of sausage from forming.
  3. Cover with the lid (knob lifted) and cook in the microwave for 3 minutes, stirring halfway to prevent the flour from settling at the bottom.
  4. For a thicker gravy, continue microwaving in 30-second intervals until it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. The mixture will be foamy; whisk until a smooth gravy forms.
  5. Serve the gravy with biscuits, eggs, or your favorite dish.

Serving suggestions & tips

  • Don’t forget flaky biscuits to go with the gravy!
  • Serve over toasted English muffins, grits, mashed potatoes, or a baked potato.
  • Use it with pasta or over rice for a delicious and savory meal!

Recipe notes

  • Notice any foaming? This is normal; these are just proteins from the sausage that have risen to the top. This foaming will go away when you whisk it back in.
  • If you'd like to cook the sausage before adding the liquids, follow the directions for How to Microwave Ground Beef, then strain it and continue with the recipe as described.
  • This recipe works because of the fat content — be sure to use whole milk and heavy cream for the best result. Otherwise, you may get a thinner, less flavorful gravy.
  • Freeze the gravy in Anytime Freezer Trays and reheat as needed.
  • Microwave ovens vary, even with the same wattages. Adjust cooking times as needed.
